In this video we’re going to talk about the traffic, our health and safety, and the safety of our children.
Let’s talk biking in Torrance.
Why is this important? At least 6 people in my office could easily ride a bike to work every day - that’s 60 a week. However, there is no reasonable - safe way for me to get from my home in North Torrance to my office in Central Torrance. Take into account trips to and from our schools and this is a serious issue worth resolving.
Over 10 years ago, the City of Torrance adopted the SBBC+ Master Plan. Since then, you may notice that we’ve made almost no real headway in North Torrance. Empty promises to our residents not fulfilled by our city Councilmember. In fact, our Councilmember has voted to make it more difficult and less safe to bike in Torrance, all while not making any headway on infrastructure.
I’m on 182nd which is how many of our North High students get to class. This was identified as a location for a bike lane. It was recently repaved, but the city missed a prime opportunity to make our North High students safer. City Council needs to mandate all new paving jobs and paving RFPs require the SBBC+ be integrated.
We’ve addressed North High, so let’s talk about El Camino College. Torrance needs to do our part in supporting the Redondo Beach Blvd Alternative Transportation Corridor. This project is funded and would make it safer for south bay bikers to get to and from ECC.
Now let’s talk about our kids. I my kids and I recently took a ride with the North Torrance Bike Bus. I had such a great time that I immediately put out a call for others to try it as well! A couple weeks later, I rode with them again, this time my wife Mia, and Torrance Mayor Pro Tem Sharon Kalani joined us. Credit where credit is due, my opponent Jon Kaji accepted his invitation and met us at the finish line with Torrance stickers and his business card.
I LOVE this idea and would like to see it standardized throughout our city. Even going as far as working with our schools to create marked bike bus routes to our schools. Everyone who, like me, lives near one of our schools knows that we should be doing everything in our power to encourage alternate - safe - ways for our students to get to school.
If this is something you think is important, I’m running for City Council to address neglected issues like this. I’d appreciate your support. You can learn more at david4torrance.com #torrance #bike #bicycle #bikebus
